When the .NET generic top-level extension was initially started in 1985, together with the first domain name extensions on the World Wide Web, it was supposed to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. Since there were no particular conditions about the usage of the top-level extension, though, .NET domains were booked and used for various purposes and by loads of people.
